Huntly Festival of Illustration - The Illustrators of George MacDonald and Festival of Scottish Illustration

By Experience Huntly on 11/04/2024

From 28th Aug – 9th Sept 2024 two major new exhibitions and a programme of related events will be held in the wonderful new community gallery and cinema at No 30 The Square, Huntly.

One exhibition will celebrate 200 years since the birth of George MacDonald in Huntly with an exhibition of the illustrators of his children’s books, and the other will show the work of many of Scotland’s leading illustrators and animators.

Revealing something of George MacDonald’s life and to celebrate his role as the ‘father of fantasy fiction’, the focus of the first exhibition will be a colourful and unique display of illustrations from his children’s books with 48 illustrators featured, from the 1860s to the present day. This is the first time such a collection has been brought together and it’s a unique opportunity to discover the huge variety of wonderful illustrators who were inspired by MacDonald’s writing for children. There will also be some George MacDonald-themed events, so look out for the full programme which will be available soon.

The second exciting exhibition to be held in the gallery at No 30 will highlight Scottish children’s illustration and animation including picture books, comics, graphic novels and award-winning animation. There will be a children’s story corner, an ‘art station’ and an interactive puppet theatre to keep the youngest visitors entertained. An exciting programme of events for all ages will feature some of the best Scottish children’s illustrators, comic book artists and award-winning animators, who are coming to Huntly from across Scotland to take part.

Exhibitions and events are free, and there will be something for all ages to enjoy.
